DFSC Success Story:
Goat Grazing Project in Hiller Highlands area of Oakland
Collaboration = Results
DFSC, with the help of Allstate Insurance, Hiller Highlands neighborhood groups (View map), the Oakland Fire Department, and Kaiser Elementary School completed a fuels reduction project in the Hiller Highlands area near the Caldecott Tunnel in Oakland.
Allstate Insurance, a longtime supporter of Fire Safe Councils throughout California, provided funding to use goats to manage the fire-prone vegetation on the site. The "patrol" of 400 goats, supplied by Ecosystem Concepts, Inc.[ http://www.ecosystemconcepts.com/ ] spent several days eating the vegetation on the steep hillsides as well as entertaining the students and neighbors.
