Diablo Firesafe Easy Weekend Checklist

Here are 3 simple ways to prepare for wildfire without giving up your weekend.

1: Take 2 Minutes to Make a Plan

Stay calm, cool, and collected in the event of evacuation with a simple checklist and some basic preparation. You can create a customized plan in a minute or two using the CAL FIRE Ready for Wildfire website app.

Answer just four questions and the system will create a step-by-step checklist for your household. This includes specific planning for pets, seniors, people with disabilities, and children.

2: A Simple Way to Stay Smoke-Free

There may be smoke in the air this weekend, which is a good reminder to change the filters in any air conditioners or air filters you may have.

If you don’t have an indoor air filter yet, consider buying one now, preferably with a HEPA filter. California Air Resources Board provides guidelines and a list of approved systems to help find the best air filter for you.

Keep in mind that popular ionizing air filters produce ozone (smog), and may not meet California standards. Your best bet is to use mechanical air filters that can be changed periodically.

Current and forecasted air quality is also available at the AirNow site. This is an excellent resource if you are making plans for outdoor activities, and their interactive map displays real-time conditions.

3: Sign Up for Emergency Alerts!

We just can’t say this enough: Everyone should get emergency alerts on their phone. Signing up is fast, easy, and saves lives.

So sign up for local alerts from CAL FIRE right now.

And… Oakland Fire Department is Hiring

If you or someone you know are interested in becoming a firefighter, the Oakland Fire Department is recruiting Firefighter and Firefighter EMT trainees. Details about the jobs and eligibility are available on the City of Oakland website.

There is also an informational Zoom presentation tomorrow, August 5th, at 10:00am. This session will help explain the application process in more detail and provide information about the required exams.
