The Diablo Firesafe Council (DFSC) is searching for an Executive Director to oversee current grant-funded programs and lead future growth opportunities.
Organization
Diablo Firesafe Council’s role in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties is to serve as a catalyst for bringing together people, agencies, and the means to substantially reduce the impact of wildland fire on our communities. DFSC serves approximately 2.7 million community members and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a board composed of residents, professionals, and representatives from public agencies. DFSC programs are funded by state and foundation grants, as well as donations from organizations, companies, and individuals.

Position
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for DFSC staff, programs, revenue expansion, and execution of its mission. The ED will bring knowledge of current California wildfire prevention practices and programs, and be willing to develop a broad understanding of how DFSC can contribute to and be recognized as an important source of wildfire knowledge and information.
Job Description
This is a part time, remote independent contractor position
Manage current grants - reporting, invoicing, deliverables, meetings
Oversight of DFSC’s programs
Board support and administration, including running board meetings and board recruitment
Run executive committee meetings and staff meetings
Grant writing and grant management
Fundraising
Outreach to allied organizations and government agencies
Stakeholder engagement
Qualifications
Desirable Knowledge and Skills:
Wildland Fire experience - prevention, planning, and/or vegetation management.
Knowledge of the basic principles of wildfire safety, defensible space, fire-safe landscaping, and building ignition prevention (home hardening).
Experience in nonprofit organization, operation, policies, and procedures.
Past success working with a board of directors with the ability to cultivate and encourage productive board member relationships.
Ability to evaluate organizational, administrative, and budgetary problems and find workable solutions.
Proficiency in grant management, including budgets and expense reports.
Preparation of grant applications, invoices, and progress reports.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Effective communication strategies with different interest groups, including state, federal and local government entities.
Experience in public relations including strategic communication skills to manage reputation and public perception. Professional-level writing, including press releases.
Effective verbal and written communications.
Event management: planning, organizing of projects and programs.
Proficient with Google Suite: Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms and Drive.
Proficient with Zoom and scheduling meetings via Zoom.
Work effectively with individuals and organizations. Ability to make public presentations at community meetings and other public events.
Ability to learn and understand target audiences and discrete communities.
Self-starter with the ability to organize and work independently, develop schedules, and manage file systems and archives.
Ability to explore and create partnerships with individuals and organizations with aligned missions.
Compensation
The Executive Director will be retained as an independent contractor through the life of the current grant ending January 1, 2027. Opportunity to extend contract and create salaried, full time position dependent upon future funding. Office space and equipment are not provided.
